Korfball Australia is pleased to announce the reformation of our National Team program, with long-time Korfball servant Helen Searle returning to the fold to lead the program. The Korfball Australia board is thrilled that Helen has accepted the invitation to head up the next iteration of the National Team program in the role of National Team Director. This role is not a direct coaching role, but rather will see Helen appoint and oversee coaches, as well as assist in squad management. Helen’s unparalleled experience across all levels and roles within Korfball will no doubt lead to a strong and sustainable National Team program.
The role of National Team Director was a new role established in 2020, and initially filled by Margo Wiltens, a Volleyball Coach with Volleyball Australia, who has Dutch heritage, blending familiarity with Korfball with a High Performance skillset. While Margo wasn’t able to continue with the role due to her commitments to the Olympic Games Volleyball program, her assistance in laying the groundwork of the new-look program, including her input on new policies and procedures, is greatly appreciated. We look forward to Helen continuing with this work, and building on the foundations already laid.
While initial efforts were made last year, the combination of cancelled international tournaments, an international travel ban, state border closures and a need to focus on attempted domestic tournaments led to the Korfball Australia board postponing the launch of the National Team program. However, with the recent announcements regarding international travel to-and-from Australia, as well as announcements from the IKF around upcoming tournaments (as well as more announcements expected soon), the Korfball Australia Board feels the time is now right to relaunch the National Team program. As such, we are requesting expressions of interest from anyone interested in a Head Coach role at U19, U21 and Open level, with player expressions of interest to be called for shortly. An application form is below.
The Head Coach of each squad is responsible for the overall direction of the squad, with the support of the National Team Director. This role will also include the recruitment of coaching and support staff as desired or required, with the support of the National Team Director and Korfball Australia Board as required. The organisation and running of training camps and other ongoing training sessions, including liaising with non-centrally located players, is also the ultimate responsibility of the Head Coach, but can be delegated as required. The Head Coach is also heavily involved in team selection, in accordance with the currently drafted policies and procedures. The term of the appointment is negotiable with the National Team Director, but at a minimum will include any International tournaments in 2022. As with all roles within Korfball Australia at the present time, this role is conducted on a volunteer basis, however reimbursement of costs may be possible in some cases. For more information, please email h.searle@korfball.org.au with any questions.
We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces join this new generation of the National Team program.
