Korfball Australia is saddened to hear of the passing of Andrew Barrett over the weekend. Andrew was a founding member of the Newcastle Royals Korfball Club, and has been a stalwart of the New South Wales and Australian Korfball community for many years.
Andrew is being remembered as a fierce opponent on the court, while remaining the nicest person you could hope to meet off the court. His contributions to korfball, particularly in NSW, will long be remembered with one of the competitions continuing to be named the Andrew Barrett Cup.
Andrew’s battle with MND is a familiar story to many within the Korfball community, with his “Team Barrett” fundraising caps a ubiquitous sight at many events over recent years. Despite the setbacks, Andrew never complained and made a point to live life to the fullest. He also continued helping raise awareness and funds for Fight MND, among other organisations. You can help continue Andrew’s efforts by making a donation in his honour.
Andrew will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts go out to his wife Jennifer and the rest of family, as well as the Newcastle and NSW Korfball community.
